ROOM & ROOF

A rear extension for a young family in the Heaver Conservation Area, Tooting, to improve the living spaces and their relationship with the garden.

A sequence of new internal and external spaces pivot around the column expressed on both the inside and outside of the rear facade.

The profiled roof responds to the stepped section of the existing house behind, with a long north facing clerestory window illuminating the living room in the wider side of the space.  The kitchen sits in the lower side with the sink facing out over the long garden

The quality of the brickwork detailing of the existing house is reimagined in the extension using Swanage handmade bricks, with the soldier lintels expanded as the coursing over the openings, and bespoke precast elements by Cambridge Architectural Precast taking the place of the terracotta and stone details of the house's face onto the street.
