Competition entry for the Sara Hilden Museum in Tampere, Finland: a large new art gallery set amongst converted factories and mills.
Our proposal combines a simple set of gallery spaces arranged around a central staircase with a striking stepped roof profile formed from a series of large north facing roof lights. The combination of the plan and section forms a rich collection of interlocking spaces, like a 3 dimensional puzzle.
Clad in dark red stained timber, the buildings offer a civic presence that reflects the tone of the historic brickwork of the surrounding large scale factory buildings. The timber, with a grid of subtle ornamentation, is both redolent of the smaller nearby wooden buildings, and hints at the history of weaving in the spinning mill opposite. The stepped rooflines enlarge the pigeon-step gables found around the site, to provide a distinctive and recognisable architecture, that holds diverse range of spaces inside.
