SIMPLE ADDITION

Helping our clients restructure their small semi-detached Victorian villa, creating a large open plan living space.

Our clients wanted to create a simple flexible space for their young family in their small semi detached cottage in Tottenham, but the typical ‘wraparound extension’  just would not give them what they needed.   We helped our clients envision something different - the long rear garden gave enough space to build a simple full width ’shed’ across the back of the house, leaving the existing form of the building as it was.  This gave a large multi functional room that was much more spacious than anything else in the house, while hugely reducing the complexity of the construction.

The new space is robust and flexible enough to respond to the different requirements of the clients as their children grow up.  The finishes were intentionally kept pared-back to allow the clients to slowly complete themselves when their time allows, as part of an ongoing self-build process.  Painted blockwork walls, a warm concrete floor and an exposed timber ceiling provide a robust environment for the controlled chaos of family life.

Within the original house, the existing cramped side-to-side staircase has been reorientated to run front to back, allowing for improved connection between the rooms.  A generous bathroom has been added to the ground floor, looking onto a secluded courtyard garden, and a compact shower room added to the first floor.
